Awareness Session on Importance of Plastic Recycling

The Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment (ICPE) conducted an engaging and informative awareness session on the Importance of Plastic Recycling  on 29 January 2025 in our school. The session aimed to educate young learners about the significance of responsible plastic disposal and recycling, fostering environmental consciousness from an early age.

The session started with the Expert  from ICPE Ms. Neha Maurya introducing the topic with an interactive storytelling approach, making it relatable and engaging for the young audience. She started with explaining what plastic is, its everyday uses, and why it is essential in our lives. She also informed the students that  the first fully synthetic plastic, Bakelite, was invented by Leo Baekeland in 1907. Through colorful visuals, children learnt about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on nature, wildlife, and human health.  The session demonstrated the process of plastic recycling using simple illustrations, showing how old plastic items can be transformed into new products. She told the students to look out for the numbers written inside a triangle on the body of plastics, it gives us the identification codes of plastics.

She also informed about the government initiative in this regard with the introduction of two bin culture,  where wet waste is thrown in green bin and dry waste is thrown in blue bin.

To make the session practical, ICPE expert shared easy-to-follow habits such as:

  • Using reusable water bottles and lunch boxes
  • Segregating waste at home
  • Saying no to single-use plastics like straws and plastic bags.

The session concluded with a quiz to reinforce learning. Elina Malik of class IV and Arham Jain of class III won mobile stand and t-shirt respectively. Both the items were made of recycled plastic.

This awareness session was a significant step of our school towards building a greener future, encouraging young minds to become proactive environmental soldiers.
